FIRE-SAT

artiFicial Intelligence on eaRth obsErvation SATellites

The project investigated the challenges and benefits of deploying artificial intelligence (AI) in space in a holistic way leading to first successful in-flight demonstrations. The insights and results in terms of data set preparation techniques, machine learning models and their implementations on space hardware, form a solid basis for developing AI-enabled time-critical earth observation solutions in environmental management, agriculture and science.

Hard Facts

The project demonstrates the deployment of artificial intelligence in earth observation on satellite platforms. The rapid identification of phenomena directly in space, such as the investigated wildfire (smoke plume) detection in live pictures on the satellite, is essential to enable faster responses to time-critical developments on earth and enables completely new space missions and use cases.
